The main purpose of article marketing is SEO, plain and simple. No matter what anybody tries to tell you, the objective of submitting articles is to get backlinks to your site. OK, so it has more value than that, but its primary purpose is SEO.

Here’s a post that mentions that the opinion in some of the webmaster community is that article marketing has little, if any, SEO benefit.  I respectfully disagree. It’s funny that around the time of that post, I was seeing tremendous increases in traffic and keyword activity due to article marketing. I’ll briefly outline what was going on at the time.

It was April of 2007 and I had a 3 year old site with about 120 or so pages. I was averaging about 120 daily unique visitors, and most days I was getting over 200 visitors a day.

Here are some of my stats from April 2007 for that site:

As you can see, I was getting a steady flow of traffic, but I knew I could be getting a lot more. So, I started a campaign using article marketing SEO techniques. Before I show the after picture, let me show you some of my referrer and keywords stats:

Notice that we had 294 total referring URLs. We need to seriously beef that up. More importantly, look at how weak this site is with Google with only 133 page views coming from what should be our number one search engine. That needs to change in a big way.

Now let’s look at the keyword situation. One of your objectives for your website should be to keyword diversity. Your site should be found for many many different keywords, the more the better. Here’s what we looked like in April of 2007:

817 keywords. Not so good. I want to be found for thousands of keywords.

So what did I do? I released a couple of articles to several hundred article directories, and watch what happened over the next couple of months.

Here’s what our referrers and total keywords looked like in June:

Let’s talk keywords first. This month the site was found for 1608 (up from 817) keywords for that month, with the top keyword having been found 119 times. Notice that our top keyword numbers are actually down compared to April, but we’re changing the keyword distribution. Our traffic is significantly higher because we’re receiving traffic from a much larger keyword pool, and many more sources than before (almost double the number of referrers, in fact). Since the traffic is more diverse, it’s also more stable.

Over the next two months, I added very few pages to the site, and the primary website promotion technique was to just let those articles bake in. And bake in they did. Let’s have a look at what was happening by August:

Now we’re cookin’! We’re averaging almost 300 uniques a day, and we’ve significantly increased our page views. Now let’s look at where this traffic is coming from so we can see the true effects of article marketing on the personality of the site:

And now you see why we’re doing well. We’ve increased our referrers to 469. We’ve got Google in first place, with 5,583 page views. That’s a heck of a lot better than 133, don’t you think? If anyone tells you that you can’t use article marketing SEO tactics to improve your organic search, they’re wrong.

Look at the August keyword data above. The site is now being found for 2894 keywords, a huge improvement over the original number of 817. With the exception of "cat gestation period" all of the keywords above were in the target list of keywords we wanted to improve using the articles.

In short, article marketing works to improve organic search. In fact, it’s one of the best ways to improve your results in the search engines. The proof is in the stats as you can see. But, you can make it even better. How? I’ll discuss that in an upcoming post. I’ll show you how to write your articles for maximum effectiveness as well as how to combine these techniques with social media for even faster results.

The best tool I know of for article marketing SEO is the Unique Article Wizard. That’s the tool I used for the two articles I submitted that produced the results you see here.
