Did Eurekster Commit Swicki-cide?
If you’ve been using a Swicki from Eurekster, you may have noticed that they’ve been down recently. Are they dead? Speculation by some is that they may not come back up. I know that a number of webmasters were using them and some had claimed that it was working well for them and reported big traffic stats.
To be honest, I never really figured out the Swicki thing. I had been using one on one of my sites, and I noticed that I only saw traffic from it in my referrer stats when I had it on my site. Was it my site that was generating the traffic and then sending it to Eurekster, which was then sending it back to me? If so, then there was actually no additional traffic boost from it since my site was generating the traffic in the first place.
I never really looked into what was actually happening, and I ended up taking it down since I noticed that it showed 17 links out of my site (although these were javascript), and people weren’t using the Google search on my site when the Swicki was up. I was going to revisit my use of it at a later time, but perhaps now I can cross that task off my list. Hey, maybe I killed Eurekster by taking it off my site. OK, I’m not that powerful, so probably not.
Maybe the the Dark Horse won and the cyber-war against Swicki’s is over?
As this post shows, the Quantcast traffic estimates for Eurekster have been falling for quite some time. Still, I know that some people have been claiming that their Swicki’s were doing well. I think there are a lot of very ticked off webmasters who set up Swicki search on a lot of pages/sites, and now are having to contemplate taking it all down. Let’s hear it for includes!
Update: Swicki’s are back up and running.
